If you have kids or are ever around kids for any length of time, you get the opportunity to hear them speak in their native tongue. My daughter is a perfect example, in fact she has made up her own words & phrases that I refer to as "Bekahisms".
I am not sure when it all started, but I clearly remember her visiting her cousins' house and then telling me that they all had fun on their "jumpoline". It is funny, because it makes more sense then what we call it, because we certainly don't tramp on the thing!
Last summer Bekah decided to follow in her brother's (wet) footsteps by jumping in the pool with both arms wrapped around her legs. I watched and waited, holding my breath, hoping she would not hurt herself. My breath gave way to laughter when in midair she exclaimed "Cotton Ball!". I am not sure where that one came from...
It didn't end there. As we were shopping for supplies for the school year Bekah looked up at me and said,"Don't forget to get my teacher some "han(d)itizer". Ok, that also makes sense, since we don't sanitize our san's!
She never ceases to amaze me with her words and ideas. For a six year old, she is quite clever. I love to hear her "isms" and was afraid that as she got older that they would stop, but then in the last week I was graced with two new gems of the "Bekah" language.
After being in the pool, she decided she had enough and came in to get changed. She undressed from her bathing suit and without thought declared to her grandma that now it was time to get "updressed". Of course my mom has not stopped giggling at that word nugget! It wasn't much before I got to hear the newest phrase in her unique vocabulary. Somehow we finally convinced my husband to allow us to have a furry friend join our family. The kids promised to share in the resposibilities of feeding, walking, and playing with our new friend. The day we came home from the pet store with our morkie puppy, Rebekah decided to uphold her end of the bargain. She was being a "big girl" and helping walk, ok, well, run our new canine friend, when she shouted with glee, "Run like the windshield!". I asked her where she came up with that and she said, "It just came up in my head".
Maybe you are thinking I should be correcting her, so she does not learn incorrect English. I bet she is thinking she needs to correct me! Since she does not graduate for ten more years, I think I can wait...
